Fiber optic measurements and diagnostics

We provide professional OTDR, power and attenuation measurements for the acceptance and diagnosis of fiber optic links, including complete measurement documentation.

  • OTDR, power & loss testing (fiber optic LWL)
  • Acceptance testing for FTTH, FTTB & backbone routes
  • Fault detection for outages & line interruptions
  • Clean measurement reports & documentation for handover

Measurement first

Visible basis for acceptance, operations and troubleshooting

The goal is not raw measurement data, but a clear decision basis for acceptance, troubleshooting and the next operational steps.

Why fiber optic measurements and diagnostics matter

Whether your network is new or has been in operation for years, reliable fiber quality cannot be assessed without proper measurements. Modern tools detect reflection peaks, high loss values, micro-bends, damaged fibers and poor splices—before they cause outages or performance issues.

Our measurement reports provide a dependable basis for acceptance, operation and future expansion. They ensure technical transparency for utilities, operators, property managers, tenants and internal stakeholders.

How fiber optic measurements and diagnostics become operationally readable

01

Define the test point

Route, endpoints and test objective are scoped cleanly first.

02

Run OTDR or power testing

Depending on the case, we test route behavior, loss or operating margin.

03

Evaluate anomalies

Splice points, connectors and events are translated into a technical diagnosis.

04

Report and next step

You receive reports with a clear conclusion for acceptance or remediation.

Our services for fiber optic measurements and diagnostics

OTDR Testing (Optical Time Domain Reflectometry)

OTDR tests make events along the fiber visible—splices, connectors, closures, loss peaks and breaks. This gives you a clear picture of how your fiber route is structured.

  • OTDR testing for new and existing routes
  • Event and loss value analysis
  • Documentation for each fiber and route

Power & Loss Measurements

Power and attenuation measurements show whether your fiber connections meet required thresholds—essential for acceptance reports and SLA validation.

  • Input and output power / loss measurements
  • Testing based on your specifications or relevant standards
  • Clear, transferable reports for handover

Acceptance Testing & Documentation

After construction or modification of fiber networks, we perform full acceptance measurements and prepare understandable documentation for clients and operators.

  • Acceptance tests for FTTH, FTTB and backbone routes
  • Digital documentation (PDF / spreadsheets)
  • Comparison with required target values and thresholds

Periodic Testing of Existing Networks

Existing networks should be tested regularly—especially when load increases, new services are introduced or changes are made. We locate weak points and provide actionable improvements.

  • Spot checks or full measurement campaigns
  • Assessment of reserves and critical segments
  • Recommendations for maintenance and upgrades

Fault diagnostics

Locating fiber breaks & line interruptions

Using OTDR and complementary measurement techniques, we pinpoint the exact location of fiber breaks, crushed cables or damaged splices—allowing targeted excavation or repair.

Analysis of high loss values

We determine whether excessive loss is caused by poor splicing, low-quality connectors, mechanical damage or incorrect cable installation—and recommend corrective action.

Inspection of splice & patch areas

In distribution cabinets, PoPs and racks we check splice quality, patch management and labeling to eliminate mis-patching and identification errors.

Support for IT service providers & operators

We work closely with your IT provider, system integrator or internal IT team and deliver the measurement basis required for further troubleshooting or planning.

Typical use cases for fiber optic measurements and diagnostics

Acceptance of newly built fiber networks

Measurement and documentation after FTTH/FTTB or backbone construction—also when the network was built by another contractor.

Faults in existing networks

Recurring outages, unexplained performance problems or full line interruptions in enterprise or operator networks.

Network takeover & operator changes

Measurement campaigns before networks are transferred to new operators, utilities or housing companies.

Modifications & expansions

Ensuring all routes remain within required technical thresholds after network extensions or restructuring.

How a measurement campaign with smaRTtechnik works

01

1. Defining objectives & scope

Together we determine which routes, locations and fiber pairs should be measured, and which standards or threshold values apply.

02

2. Preparation & measurement concept

We prepare a measurement concept, coordinate measurement points and arrange access to manholes, closures, racks and technical rooms.

03

3. On-site measurement execution

We perform OTDR, power and loss measurements on site, document all results and record any anomalies.

04

4. Evaluation & documentation

After testing, we analyze the data and prepare clear measurement reports and summaries for both technical teams and decision-makers.

What we optimize for in testing

  • Modern equipment: OTDR, power and loss testing with up-to-date instruments.
  • Experienced technicians: field-proven team specialized in fiber optics.
  • Transparent reports: documentation that both technicians and managers can easily understand.
  • Regional presence: fast availability across Frankfurt / Rhein-Main.
  • Seamless integration: ideal complement to our Fiber Deployment and Network Technology services.

FAQ – Fiber optic measurements and diagnostics

Which regions do you cover for fiber optic measurements and diagnostics?

We operate across the entire Rhein-Main region, with a strong focus on Frankfurt am Main, including Offenbach, Hanau, Rodenbach and surrounding districts.

Do you test only fiber optic networks or also copper?

Our core focus is fiber optic measurement (LWL). In mixed infrastructures, we collaborate with your IT partners for copper cable sections.

Can you measure networks built by other companies?

Yes. We perform measurement campaigns and troubleshooting on networks built by any contractor—for acceptance testing, operator changes or quality audits.

How quickly can you arrive in case of a fault?

This depends on workload and location. In the Rhein-Main region we can often arrive quickly. For critical infrastructure, we recommend a service contract with defined response times.

Will I receive all measurement results in digital form?

Yes. You receive complete digital reports (PDF, spreadsheets) ready for integration into your documentation or ticketing systems.
